LIGHT-BASED MEDIA: INtermediate


Fall Quarter 2019


Classes #1-6: Thursdays with Will Kirtley and Dylan Neuwirth.

Studio Sessions #1-4: Sundays with Dani Kaes.


Class #1: Thursday, October 17: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-6:15 pm: Introduction.
6:15-6:45 pm: Light-Based Media: Intermediate Topics #1.
6:45-7:15 pm: Comprehensive safety presentation on studio etiquette, industry hazards, and best-practice first-aid solutions.
7:15-8:15 pm: Students will review skills and techniques learned in introduction classes. The instructor will meet with each student to discuss goals for the class. Students will be encouraged to create completed artworks with refined patterns, pursue focused experimentation with glass tubes, or a combination of both. Students will receive a demonstration of correct pattern layout. Students will be introduced to bending phosphor glass. Students in Intermediate class will receive four different colors of 10/12mm phosphor coated tubing, five sticks each of green, blue, white, and gold. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase more glass tubes and pumping for additional pieces.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up Orientation and Conclusion.

Class #2: Thursday, October 24: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-6:15 pm: Overview of previous class.
6:15-8:45 pm: Students focus on bending phosphor colored glass tubing and receive instruction on splicing phosphor tubing as well as glass bending techniques like European butt welds and glass shearing. Students desiring to make complete artworks will work on perfecting pattern-making skills.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up and Conclusion.

Studio Session #1: Sunday, October 27: 10:00 am-2:00 pm
Students will focus on techniques introduced in previous classes. Students can receive one-on-one help from instructor as needed. Ability to pump any finished tube is available. Labels are required on tubes ready for processing with name and gas color (neon or argon, with or without mercury). Only tubes with labels will be processed.

10:00 am-1:45 pm: Studio Session
1:45 pm-2:00 pm: Clean-Up

Class #3: Thursday, October 31: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-6:15 pm: Overview of previous class.
6:15-8:45 pm: During the course of this class students and instructor will discuss fabrication techniques and supplies for presentation of finished artworks as students work to perfect their bending skills and focus on completion of up to six 4-foot tubes of various col0rs, 3 of which may be mercury vapor tubes.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up and Conclusion.

Studio Session #2: Sunday, November 3: 10:00 am-2:00 pm
Students will focus on techniques introduced in previous classes. Students can receive one-on-one help from instructor as needed. Ability to pump any finished tube is available, and at least one tube is due. Labels are required on tubes ready for processing with name and gas color (neon or argon, with or without mercury Only tubes with labels will be processed.

10:00 am-1:45 pm: Studio Session
1:45 pm-2:00 pm: Clean-Up

Class #4: Thursday, November 7: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-6:45 pm: Light-Based Media: Intermediate Topics #2.
6:45-8:45 pm: Emphasis will be on completion of student designs and projects using the cumulative techniques and skills learned in the previous three weeks.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up and Conclusion.

Studio Session #3: Sunday, November 10: 10:00 am-2:00 pm
Students will focus on techniques introduced in previous classes. Students can receive one-on-one help from instructor as needed. Ability to pump any finished tube is available. Labels are required on tubes ready for processing with name and gas color (neon or argon, with or without mercury). Only tubes with labels will be processed.

10:00 am-1:45 pm: Studio Session
1:45 pm-2:00 pm: Clean-Up

Class #5: Thursday, November 14: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-6:15 pm: Overview of previous class.
6:15-8:45 pm: Emphasis will be on completion of student designs and projects using the cumulative techniques and skills learned in the previous four weeks.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up and Conclusion.

Studio Session #4: Sunday, November 17: 10:00 am-2:00 pm
Emphasis on completing final tubes for processing. Students can receive one-on-one help from instructor as needed. Final tubes are due from each student. Labels are required on final tubes ready for processing with name and gas color (neon or argon, with or without mercury). Only tubes with labels will be processed.

6:00 pm-9:45 pm: Studio Session
9:45 pm-10:00 pm: Clean-Up

Class #6: Thursday, November 14: 6:00-9:00 pm
6:00-7:00 pm: Light-Based Media: Intermediate Topics #3 and Open Studio Discussion.
7:00-8:15 pm: Students will light tubes and discuss final assembly presentation ideas. Each student will receive an assembly kit containing one transformer, two endcaps, and GTO wire.
8:15-8:45 pm: Students pack-up final projects.
8:45-9:00 pm: Clean-Up and Conclusion.
