Class

Whether you're a novice, a working artist seeking to expand your studio practice, or a seasoned enthusiast ready to get back into the fire — this is the class for you. Instructed by William Kirtley, Dani Kaes, and Dylan Neuwirth.

Light-Based Media: introduction

Learn the history and contemporary uses of this unique medium while producing illuminated tubes of various shapes and sizes to be used in the creation of your own artwork. Instruction will include an introduction to the noble gasses, studio safety, bombarding process, as well as an overview of correct transformer loading and wiring. Time in the fire will be focused on learning 90-degree bends, U-bends, curves, and fusing glass tubes.

Students will be provided materials to produce a maximum of 4 finished tubes of up to 4 feet in length (16 feet total footage). Tubes may consist of clear glass filled with either neon or argon gas. Students will be supplied a complete bending kit as well as a neon transformer to power their artistic creations.

No prerequisite is required.

Cost: $615 + tax

Tuesday Schedule: 6 classes meeting on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm beginning on March 19, 2019 and concluding on April 23, 2019. Includes four optional, open studios meeting on Saturdays from 8:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm-5:00 pm beginning on March 30, 2019 and concluding on April 20, 2019.

Wednesday Schedule: 6 classes meeting on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm beginning on March 20, 2019 and concluding on April 24, 2019. Includes four optional, open studios meeting on Saturdays from 8:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm-5:00 pm beginning on March 30, 2019 and concluding on April 20, 2019.

Class

A focused and in-depth class that pushes your light-based studies into broader territory while discovering new techniques and materials. Instructed by Kelsey Fernkopf, Dani Kaes, and Dylan Neuwirth.

Light-Based Media: intermediate

Students will review the history, skills, and techniques learned in Introductory classes as they create one completed artwork or pursue focused experimentation with clear and/or phosphor colored glass tubing. Instruction includes detailed demonstrations of expanded glass bending techniques such as European welding, glass shearing and tube splicing with a focus on an array of fabrication and installation tactics to achieve a chosen aesthetic.

Students will be provided materials to produce a maximum of 4 finished tubes of up to 6 feet in length (24 feet total footage). Tubes may consist of clear glass filled with neon or argon gas and up to 2 out of 4 of these tubes may be produced using phosphor coated tubing and filled with an argon/mercury gas mixture. Students will be supplied a neon transformer to power their artistic creations.

A prerequisite is required – Light-Based Media: Introduction.

Cost: $715 + tax

Thursday Schedule: 6 classes meeting on Thursdays from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm beginning on March 21, 2019 and concluding on April 25, 2019. Includes four optional, open studios meeting on Sundays from 10:00am-2:00pm beginning on March 31, 2019 and concluding on April 14, 2019, with the final studio meeting from 6pm-10pm on Saturday, April 20.
